Hip-Hop Kings Interviews Deeprooted [Exclusive]
HHK: Thanks for speaking to us Deep Rooted. The U.K seem to have really taken to the new album, and the single Crazy. How successful was 2009 for you guys? And what initial plans do you have for 2010?
Deep Rooted: (mr brady)
Yeah we really appreciate all the love the U.K been giving us. I was just out there with Souls Of Mischief and it was a lot of love out there. We plan on getting out there as a group to perform in 2010 and promote the new album dropping Febuary 8th overseas.
(Dj Artistic) Well 2009 was a break out year for us, various music reveiws, Myspace features and the U.S tour Which helped us land our video “Crazy” on MTVu, the best part about the video rotation is fans had to vote and we came out the winner, so we really Want to thank the fans for supporting DeepRooted, 2010 is off to a great start. We are entertaining our U.K tour dates and releasing our 3rd video from the self tittled album D.E.E.P.R.O.O.T.E.D “Fade” you will see a different side of our musical diversity!
HHK: I think it’s fair to say that signing to Clear Label Records was a true highlight as well. With the financial backing, should we expect to see a few U.K dates for live shows this year?
Deep Rooted: (Mr Brady)
Yeah big ups to Tajai for believing in what we do and signing us. It’s a honour to be signed to Clearlabel and Tajai. Yeah we are working on dates right now for the U.K.
HHK: The Clear Label Records CEO is Souls of Mischief’s Taj Massey. Was having a label CEO who is also part of a group influential in your decision to sign with Clear Label? And will you be collaborating with Souls of Mischief soon?
Deep Rooted: (Dj Artistic) When you look at what Souls of Mischief has contributed to independent Hip-Hop and created an empire, it shows they know what they’re doing. Combine that with our tenacious approach and commitment to our project it fits together well, so it was an easy decsion for us. We have released two records ourselves and wear differnt hats to keep our music and name valuable and visable. Yes there will be collaborations with Souls of Mischief and Deeprooted! It’s just the beginning of what we’re going to do!
(Mr Brady) It made it a lot easier, since we are all in it for the same thing, just to make good music. Souls are legends in the game so its dope. We already got songs with some of the members of Souls that are dropping this year. I got a compilation, Labor of Love dropping this year that also features Opio and Tajai of Souls. Brea has a solo album dropping this year with a label in Switzerland and she got Tajai featured on one of her tracks too. Im sure they’ll be a lot more collaborations in the future.
HHK: What’s the San Diego scene like right now? And which West-Coast artists have you collaborated with in the past?
Deep Rooted: (Mr Brady)
San Diego Hip-Hop scene is alright. We are right up the way from LA so its nothing for us to hop on the freeway for a couple hours and go up there. We got a lot of history out here though with this Hip-Hop. Deep Rooted collaborate with a lot of folks on the west. Blu, Planet Asia, LMNO, Moka Only, Exile, Aloe Blacc, Rhettmatic, Abstract Rude and more.
(Dj Artistic) San Diego Scene is good! A lot of partying going on! We have events we throw and stay connected in the community, as a matter of fact we raised $1200 for Haiti victims at our last event called “Generations” at U31, the same place we shot the “Crazy” video at our city that really supports us. We stay connected and humble. DJ Artistic stays in the mix from Thursday – Sundays at all the clubs and you will find us in the DJ booth hosting the night with him.
HHK: If you could collaborate with any specific producer or artists on the next project, who would it be, and why?
Deep Rooted: (Mr Brady)
It would have been dope to do something with Dilla (RIP). Would like to do something with Madlib, he’s one of the dopest producers ever. DJ Khalil got heat too. It would be dope to do something with the Roots too. It’s a lot of cats.
HHK: The likes of Twitter have been a powerful tool for artists in 2009. Are you personally fans of the site? And what are the other social media sites where fans can keep up to date with the music?
Deep Rooted: (Mr Brady)
Yeah we’re on twitter, twitter.com/deeprooted, myspace.com/deeprootedent and we got our own site deeprootedent.com. I think twitter is alright. Sometimes it could be a bit to much though. You gotta be careful on there, you never know who’s watching what you’re saying.
HHK: Is there anything else you’d like to add to the interview?
Deep Rooted: (Mr Brady)
Yeah expect more music from Deep Rooted and solo projects we got coming. Brea solo album, Johaz solo album with Exile and my compilation Labor of Love featuring Guilty Simpson, Blu, Diamond D, MED and a lot more. My complition will be on Clearlabel Records. I got an album with LMNO in the works and another with Moka only in the works too. Lots of music.
HHK: Thanks again for speaking to Hip-Hop Kings. Good luck for 2010 and keep in touch!
(Mr Brady)
Thanks for reaching out. Big up the UK!
