Big news has been brewing in the Golden Era camp as there has already been mention of another Hilltop Hoods album ‘Walking Under Stars’ hitting our ears in 2013. As usual the guys at Golden Era kick started their year with yet another free mixtape, featuring all the artists on the label. This has happened since 2011 and if you haven’t got these you can head over to their site (www.goldenerarecords.com.au) and pick it up as a free download. This years tape didn’t go live until February, but they didn’t leave fans standing until this, with a golden era appreciation week featuring new music each day from different artists on the label. This week was topped off with an eight minute cypher track featuring all the artists and announcing the newest member of the group K21.
The tape kicks off with the usual intro followed by a quick taste of what’s to come courtesy of Suffa and Sesta both finishing flows from a track on a previous mixtape. K21 and Pressure then slow it down a tad with a track that’s mostly K21 showing us all why he’s the newest addition to the Golden Era family, this track really feels like a father son relationship between the new kid on the block and an Australian hip hop veteran. As usual the mixtape features some full tracks from various artists that have either to come in 2013 or an old favourite from the past year that have been reproduced by one of the other in house DJ’s. Briggs follows up a Sesta track with one of his usual energetic but slightly slower flows, for me he’s truly a different take on Australian hip hop. Vents followed by Suffa is always a good mix and this beautiful combination kicks the pace up on the mixtape a mere 6 tracks in. Debris, Adfu, Jaytee and Reflux give samples of their skills with some mean cutting of the decks to break the tape up, this is probably one of my favourite DJ tracks either of these guys have done as they show how there truly is an art to scratching and you can give as much variation and style to this as you can from lyrical flows.
This brings us to half way through the tape and the rest I’m going to leave for you guys to listen to and come up with your own summaries, the second part does feature music from Roots Manuva, Slug, Aesop Rock, MF Doom, Black Milk and more. A nice little addition to the tracks where the Golden Era artists are spitting over tracks of other artists are approved and produced by the original artist. And in a sense there is a guest appearance from the Australian great Larry Emdur.
For me the Golden Era label is a sweet mix of some of the best modern rap, with all different takes on the Australian hip hop scene while all maintaining this Golden Era vibe to their songs. The label has a clear feel of the old school kick and claps beats with a feel good flow across the board, and this reason for me is why they are making movements not necessarily quickly but each step is a significant one, from ARIA awards and international tours, down to new additions such as K21. Big things are to come from these guys and while they are giving free tapes out each year back to the fans, there’s no reason not to love them.
