Hip-Hop Kings Interview with Verbal Kent
HHK: Thanks for speaking to us Verbal Kent. For the readers who may not be aware, can we have a brief introduction please?
VK: My pleasure man. I know how saturated Hip-Hop is right now, so I think an introduction is in order. I’ve been doing my thing out of Chicago IL since the late nineties. I grew up listening to quality rap music, so all I’ve ever wanted to do was follow in the footsteps of the true masters. My first album dropped in 03′, entitled “What Box”, followed by “Move With the Walls” in 06′, “Fist Shaking” in 08′, and “Brave New Rap” in 09′. I’ve shared the stage with many of my Hip-Hop heroes like Krs-1, Redman, GZA, and Sean Price, and I’ve collaborated on joints with characters such as Ill Bill, Masta Ace, Wordsworth, EDO G, and Sadat X. I’ve toured in the states, in the UK and in Europe a few times a year for the past 4 years. My rap “style” is Lyricism at it’s best, sharp and dry, quit witted and always on beat. True to the art. No B.S. I’m really into the math of writing. I’m on some Sudoku shit! Basically I love Hip-Hop music, and I’ve been trying to help carry the burden of the torch since I started making it.
HHK: We’re being prepared for the single release of “Now” which will be available from 21st June. What factors made you decide that “Now” would be a suitable single to kick off the new campaign?
VK: “Now” to me represents where I’m at in Hip-Hop. My attitude is, screw the past. This is it, right now. All my time and hard work has led up to me throwing everything into the fire, and really going for broke. I feel like if you are crazy enough to make Hip-Hop music now’days, this is the attitude you MUST have. So that’s how I’mlooking at 2010 and beyond. Aside from all that..My homie Kelakovski MURDERED the track! It was a “must rock this” now track the second I heard it!
HHK: Save Yourself is the name of the new album. What’s the release date and are there any confirmed guest appearances or producers you can reveal?
VK: Yeah for sure. The album is set to be released in the fall of 2010..with guest Appearances form Sadat X, Masta Ace, EDO G, One Be Lo, and Pete Rock. Also the project will feature production from Illmind, Marco Polo, and M-Phazes. So a bunch of Killers on the record!
HHK: You’ve visited the U.K before and performed in the major Hip-Hop cities. Should we expect to see you return in 2010 to promote the new album? And has anything been confirmed yet?
VK:Yeah man, I can’t wait to get back to the UK and Europe in 2010. Nothing confirmed yet, but in near future Ill have some exact dates to share. Nothing is more rewarding than touring to support your hard work.
HHK: You’ve had a history with working under various different record labels. For the aspiring artists watching, would you encourage them to stay independent? And what major differences did you encounter between the two?
VK: It’s complicated. If you have the means to treat yourself as a “business”, then I would highly recommend doing so. I say this because it is very rewarding to be in control of your music and what happens to it. On the other hand, help is wonderful. Gravel Records and Molemen Inc are two of the labels I’ve worked with, and both of them provided amazing help and support through the years. They are both smaller companies, so an artist can really learn all about the behind the scenes element of the actual selling and working of the record. I’ve chosen these sort of slower, more hands on routes toward my goals because I have been against becoming just another target market selling point for a big ugly company. That doesn’t mean I’m against getting BIGGER help one day from a larger company. With that said, the most important thing is to be on top of your own shit, regardless of the level of help you have. In the end, it’s your name and your business that you have to be responsible for.
HHK: You’re another great rapper coming from Chicago as we’ve seen plenty in recent years. Who else should we be looking out for in 2010?
VK: Some artists that come to mind, who are really working hard to do it big in 2010 out of Chicago would be Mass Hysteria, 1773, Pugslee Atomz, Matlok, and Diverse. All really talented and very different. Mass Hysteria just murders tracks, Pugz tours with DJ Vadim in Europe almost non-stop. 1773 really represents Chicago in a similar way to how Common used to when he first started. Matlok is a master wordsmith, with a killer instinct for pouncing tracks. And Diverse is a all around lyricist with an amazing sense of rhythm and has a unique identity on cuts.
HHK: Aside from promoting the upcoming single and album, what are your other plans for 2010?
VK: I plan on touring as much as I can, and continuing to just evolve as I writer. I have many new projects in the works…the one I am eager to tackle is a Illmind + Verbal Kent album…this is going to abuse speakers everywhere. Illmind is a BEAST, when I write to his music I grow as an artist. That’s when you know you are working with the right people.
HHK: is there anything else you’d like to add to the interview?
VK: Check out my new website.. www.verbalkent.com I have all my own music/merchandise for sale at great prices through the site. Support real Hip-Hop and real Hip-Hop will live on! Thanks for your time, big ups to Hip-Hop Kings!
HHK: Thanks again for speaking to Hip-Hop Kings. Good luck and keep in touch!

Rhyme Asylum – Solitary Confinement [Exclusive]

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

The tale of Rhyme Asylum is something we’ll be repeating to our grandchildren when asked about the true identity of 21st century U.K Hip-Hop. After earning their stripes through a series of Real Deal Open Mic sessions, Possessed, Psiklone and Skirmish collectively form Rhyme Asylum which is now a nationally recognised brand. Solitary Confinement is the brand new album which is released off the back of their debut “State of Lunacy” in 2008. The album was credited as lyrically ground breaking, and ultimately set Rhyme Asylum a bar above the rest.

R.I.P Guru of Gangstarr Tribute [Exclusive]

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

19th April 2010 marked the death of one of the most popular Hip-Hop artists in our generation. Legendary MC Guru lost an on-going battle with cancer, and the Hip-Hop world was saddened by the news which was confirmed at the early hours of Tuesday morning. Guru is of course the lyricist behind the Hip-Hop duo Gangstarr which also consisted of DJ Premier. Gangstarr were widely regarded as one of the most favourable and popular Hip-Hop duo’s in the world.

After the split of Gangstarr, Guru continued to remain in-demand, and the Jazzmatazz series was born. Working with a brand new producer at the time named Solar, Guru took a new direction with his sound for the Jazzmatazz series, promising he wouldn’t fade from his Hip-Hop roots. Four successive releases saw the Jazzmatazz series a collectors item. 2009 marked the release of Guru Lost And Found 8:0 which was a massive hit not only on Hip-Hop Kings but across the Hip-Hop board.

2010 has marked the untimely death of Guru and the tributes have been flowing. DJs to bloggers to radio personalities have flooded the airwaves and Internet pages with old school music and interviews. Guru will be ultimately missed and classed alongside the other Hip-Hop legends. I expect the readers of Hip-Hop Kings to show support and love to Guru. R.I.P 19th April 2010.

50 Cent x Eminem Interview [Exclusive]

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Sorry people. APRIL FOOLS! I wish I could get an exclusive interview with 50 Cent and Eminem. On related news, 50 Cent has just directed a video for Lloyd Banks for his single “On My Way”. We also heard news that Lloyd Banks‘ new album “The Hunger For More 2″ will be ready in the Summer 0f 2010.

Tony Yayo recently celebrated his 76th birthday recently. If you haven’t heard his single “Obama” it’s actually quite good. It appears that the phone call with 50 Cent was just another genius marketing ploy to raise the profile of both rappers and ultimately result in sales. Unfortunately Yayo doesn’t use his own Twitter page so nothing funny to report there.

And last but not least, Eminem will be back in the U.K this July for a number of major festivals including T In The Park, OpenAir and Oxegen. Relapse 2 is on it’s way (I hope it’s as good as the first) and obviously Eminem’s Refill is available to fans for purchase now.

Juttla Interview [Exclusive]

Friday, March 26th, 2010
HHK: Thanks for speaking with us Juttla. The big news that a forthcoming collaborative E.P called “The Forbidden Temple” is close to release. How did the initial discussion start?
Juttla: Hi Ryan, first off thanks for having me! LOL! I released my last album ‘At War With Satan’ in the autumn of 2008. It was a Dubstep album and the response was really good. After working closely with Wolftown Recordings for the past ten years on various projects, myself and Tricksta talked about the possibility of doing a project that would see me collaborate with their latest signing who was Manny Moscow. I had been a fan of Moscow’s from hearing the UK Runnings mixtapes that Tricksta was doing with him and I really felt his flow, delivery, vibe and skills on the mic! Tricksta approached Manny with the idea of doing a track and then it escalated into a five track EP.
HHK: What was it like working with Manny Moscow?
When I released my Hip-Hop album ‘Bass, Kicks, Snares, Spits’ on Wolftown Recordings in 2005, I did find it a little stressful. Working with all those different international artists meant that there was a lot of waiting around, especially on the posse tracks. Being to totally honest, the longness of some the acts actually put me off working with rappers!
When I sent Moscow the first instrumental I expected it to take maybe a few weeks or a month tops, so when I sent the track over and got the vocals back the next day I was totally amazed. He had written the song and recorded all the vocals in 24 hours. This showed me that Manny Moscow was professional, serious, fast, motivated, dedicated and definitely on his grind, all the qualities that I admire in an artist. Manny wrote the whole EP and recorded it all in 7 days. (Big up Manny!)
HHK: It’s not the first E.P we’ve seen from a producer / artist this year. We’ve seen Endemic and Cappo release ‘The Needle Drop EO’ and Genesis Elijah and Beezwax release “Civil Unrest”. Do you expect to see more of this format of music and what advantages does it give to the U.K Hip-Hop scene?
Juttla: Yeh I think we will see more of these kind of projects for a few reasons. One I think on an EP it’s different to an album, I think it gives you the opportunity to work with an artist that you might not necessary produce a whole album for. You can experiment a little more, try new ides, and merge styles and genres together to bring something fresh. I do think this happen a lot more, and is actually happening already with people like Niosa and Foreign Beggars recently collaborating. It keeps the UK moving, we’ve always delivered fresh upfront exciting sounds and hopefully we can continue to do this.
HHK: The lead single 1KG caused a bit of a stir with the industry and fans alike. Who had the initial idea for the concept of the track? And what properties does the track have that make it single worthy?
As with all the tracks on the EP, I sent Moscow the instrumentals and I didn’t want to cloud his creativity by commanding that a certain beat should be about a certain thing. All I wanted with ‘1KG’ was a dancefloor track that really hyped the crowd in a club. I called the beat ‘1KG’ as I had to call the beat something when I saved the Logic Pro 9 file and I just happened to call it ‘1KG’ (which happens to be weight of my testicles! LOL). Moscow just took that title and ran with it! What makes it single worthy for me is that massive infectious hook, ‘it’s very heavy, its 1kg’, even now I can’t stop singing it! It’s catchy and a lot of DJ’s globally have supported this track, so thanks to everyone who has supported ‘1KG’.
HHK: The music has been used for educational purposes. That’s quite an achievement considering the genre that we work within. How did you manage to agree this? And what information can you tell us about this?
Juttla: Tricksta was roped into doing some music industry talks for a Wolverhampton Arts & Music Collage (Big up Tricksta doing his bit for the youth!). The college was recording an anti-gun, anti-violence, anti-knife educational film and they wanted to use ‘1KG’ for a scene where some music was playing in a car. When Tricksta approached me about it I was obviously humbled and honoured to be part of such a needy and positive cause. There is a gun, knife and violence problem in the UK and projects like this can only help, so even now I am glad this happened and glad to be a part of the project.
HHK: Aside from promoting the new E.P what are your other plans for the rest of the year?
Juttla: I’m so glad you asked me that question, as it gives me space to shamelessly promote myself and everything I’m doing (sorry bruv)! Right first up ‘The Forbidden Temple EP’ with Manny Moscow drops in May on iTunes, I have just done two remixes of the Disablists feat Foreign Beggars ‘Heavy Rotation’, as well as working on my new EP which will be called ‘Verbal Dubstep’ and feature various artists from all over the UK.
I have also just started an on-line magazine called Electronic Taals which will focus on promoting Asian electronic music from all over the world. Eventually this will also be a compilation series of releases featuring the cream from the Asian electronic music scene. I am also stepping things up with my label Eastern Pressure and will be releasing the ‘Joyrider EP’ from a very talented Midlands based producer called Charged. 2010 is going to a busy a year.
HHK: What are the best websites where fans can keep up to date with your music?
Juttla: Well it’s quite funny, the other day I Googled Juttla and there were 117,000 pages with my name on! I know Park Street Promotions are good but come on Tricky I aint giving you all the credit for all that! LOL hahahaha!!!!! Yeh the can find me easily through most sites and networking sites as well as my website. Here are direct links:

HHK: Is there anything else you’d like to add to the interview?
Juttla: First up I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Manny Moscow for all his hard work, support and belief to collaborate in a project with me. Watch out for his new mixtape ‘Blood On Ice’ with UK Runnings coming soon it features a brand new Juttla produced Hip-Hop track called ‘Restless’. Also thanks to everyone who supports and buys my music, you are the reason I keep going, and also a massive thanks to Tricksta and Park Street Promotions for constantly helping to promote and help Juttla moving forward. Also a massive thanks to you Ryan for giving independent artists like myself a chance to talk about what I’m up to and to promote my new release.
HHK: Thanks again for speaking to Hip-Hop Kings. Good luck for the release of “The Forbidden Temple E.P” and keep in touch!
Juttla: Thanks for positive energy and hopefully we can talk again when I release my next EP. Thanks again Ryan… see ya!

HHK: Thanks for speaking with us Juttla. The big news that a forthcoming collaborative E.P called “The Forbidden Temple” is close to release. How did the initial discussion start?

Brother Ali Interview [Exclusive]

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

I once again was fortunate enough to speak to Rhymesayers artist and Underground Hip-Hop legend Brother Ali during his U.K tour. I met with Brother Ali in Nottingham at The Bodega, and after a chat during dinner (Brother Ali loves fish and chips), we spoke business. I asked Brother Ali about the new album “Us” and how it compared to The Undisputed Truth. Brother Ali was also quizzed about his work with Freeway, and his conversation with Just Blaze on Twitter. You can watch the exclusive Hip-Hop Kings interview with Brother Ali below.

Skandal – Hunger Pains [Exclusive]

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010
Tipped as “top five artists to watch in 2010″ by BBC 1Xtra I can’t say I disagree. Skandal is a U.K Hip-Hop artist who has firmly stamped his name within the U.K Hip-Hop world, and his new album “Hunger Pains” with DJ MK is another great release to bless rap fans’ ears this year. I’m not going to digress from the music with metaphors and saturated journalism, I’m going to reveal why Hunger Pains is essential listening material, and how DJ MK and Skandal have achieved this together.
The ingredients for a great album are all present, and this hasn’t come by chance. Firstly seventeen tracks is a great number, it’s enough to satisfy fans for months of hard work from Skandal, but it’s not too long to lose a listeners attention. DJ MK not only brings years of experience to the project, additionally his DJ abilities are second to none. Hunger Pains also features some of the most in-demand names in the circuit including Ramson Badbonez and Beat Butcha who both provide remarkable contributions to the album. So far it looks great.
With the foundations laid for Hunger Pains it’s time for Skandal to deliver. Not only does Skandal display the hunger required (pardon the pun), it arrives on a silver platter and in enormous proportions. The likes of “Home Economics” which is a Beat Butcha-produced track is raw U.K Hip-Hop at it’s finest. Immediately afterwards Skandal hits fans with “Family Tree” which is a solo track which is ideal for a street anthem. Skandal’s natural rhyming pattern shines through in both tracks, and shapes the rest of the album perfectly.
No U.K Hip-Hop album is complete without a display of immense lyricism. The pulse-raising “Terrovision” contains political substance, and the imagery-turned-reality style is evidently a strong point of Skandal’s persona. Terrovision has all the qualities for the underground radio scene, and my only criticism would be the length. Critiques and fans want to hear more! It seems that DJ MK and Skandal anticipated the request, so “Exorcising Demons” is a quick-fire effort which is a lot cleverer than a lot of people think.
Not only should Skandal and DK MK profit financially from Hunger Pains, but the publicity surrounding the release has been excellent. The availability to download the album digitally from e-stores will boost sales, and the artwork and packaging is somewhat unique too. A combination of U.K Hip-Hop and Grime from two established figureheads in the music world is exactly what we wanted. I’m confident the support from fans will be great, and a celebration will be on the cards for both DJ MK and Skandal.
