Smithsonian Institution starts hip-hop collection
Published on 02 March, 2006Email To Friend

The Smithsonian Institution has began collecting exhibits for viewer and fans for the future, dating back to up to thirty years. Some of the items include the very first turntables (perhaps used by legendary DJ’s Cool Herc and Grandmaster Flash), baggy jeans and Boom Boxes.

Rappers and music influences such as Ice T, Russell Simmons and Fab Five Freddy have already contributed to the cause, as they appreciate the relevance and importance of the cause. "It validates it," said Los Angeles-based Ice-T. "It's a good feeling."

Fab Five Freddy donated a boom box which was shared amongst them, and Grandmaster Flash has given a pair of turntables he used for the infamous 1982 hit “The Message”. Other items such as original album cover artwork and picture have been given to the collection.

The process has been carefully constructed, and fine detail has gone into the proceedings of the event. The owners and organisers of Smithsonian claim that the exhibit could take up to three to five years, until its ready to be viewed by the general public.
