Kruwl - Fallen Through
Published on 02 March, 2006Email To Friend

"Fallen Through" is something that Kruwl poured a hell of a lot into. That much is obvious in every song, as over the length of thirteen tracks he spits about so many diverse topics beats. He goes between from the deepness of the death of a friend to discussing religion, to the Iraq war.  Hip-Hop is in Kruwl's blood and despite his relative youth he shows he’s one day gonna be ready to spar with the big names.

After a thankfully short "Intro", which see’s Kruwl getting insulted by his own computer as he gets the Hip-Hop Kings website address wrong. The CD ironically gets going with "The End Of It All". Without being the most lyrical or deep track on the mixtape it captures the spirit that the rest of the mixtape carries. It’s Kruwl skipping between spiritualistic messages and his trademark punches. The beat is simple but forceful and Kruwl’s flow here is one of the best he has on the CD.

Kruwl always mentions Canibus as one of his major influences and this is easily evident on several of the tracks on "Fallen Through", "Acid Flows" and "Complex Flex" having insane levels of language and scientific knowledge. "Alchemy requires two sets for chemistry, destroying any enemy subliminally and chemically" show’s an emcee with serious potential. Sometimes Kruwl loses his way on these tracks however and his flow stumbles at points. Having heard many of Kruwl’s old tracks I’ve seen his evolution and those stutters are something he’s starting to grow out of with practice.

The strongest songs on "Fallen Through" are undoubtedly "Save Me", "Stayin Strong" and "Lost In Her Eyes" and all three find Kruwl at his lyrical deepest. "Staying Strong" is an amazingly powerful track where Kruwl mourns the loss of his friend Sophia who was far too young when she passed away. The heartfelt pain is in stark contrast to Immortal Technique’s "Positivity" beat. Kruwl has only one typical story track but he rips it telling the story of the young woman Cathy. She suffers at the hands of men through out her life including her brutal father.

I’ve sent one of the tracks to several other Hip-Hop fans and it’s easily been the most controversial track on the mixtape. In all honesty I have very little love for "Titan" the only track that has a guest appearance emcee, Hip-Hop Kings own LowRider. It’s a track about a battle between God and Satan. Lyrically both emcees hold their own but the beat is simple and ineffective for the topic they’re debating over. I say that this track is the weakest track on "Fallen Through" with the possible exception of  "Solar Meltdown". The problem with both is horrible beats where Kruwl is failing to hold his listeners. But having sent the track to other Hip-Hop heads I was surprised I was in the minority view. I can’t feel the track but people like Hip-Hop Kings other reviewer James Britt say it’s a very bumpable track. I put it to you to make up your own mind. "Solar Meltdown" is not a bad track in and of itself, but it seems quite out of place on the mixtape.  A shame as it throws you off somewhat.

Overall "Fallen Through" has a real potential however weak mastering and production let Kruwl down at points and he loses his way at points with tracks that don’t fit in with the CD as a whole, "Solar Meltdown" as a prime example.  But if Kruwl gets some funding and keeps spitting his style is something UK Hip-Hop would love to add.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5
