Skandal – Hunger Pains [Exclusive]

• March 17, 2010 • Comments (3)
Tipped as “top five artists to watch in 2010″ by BBC 1Xtra I can’t say I disagree. Skandal is a U.K Hip-Hop artist who has firmly stamped his name within the U.K Hip-Hop world, and his new album “Hunger Pains” with DJ MK is another great release to bless rap fans’ ears this year. I’m not going to digress from the music with metaphors and saturated journalism, I’m going to reveal why Hunger Pains is essential listening material, and how DJ MK and Skandal have achieved this together.
The ingredients for a great album are all present, and this hasn’t come by chance. Firstly seventeen tracks is a great number, it’s enough to satisfy fans for months of hard work from Skandal, but it’s not too long to lose a listeners attention. DJ MK not only brings years of experience to the project, additionally his DJ abilities are second to none. Hunger Pains also features some of the most in-demand names in the circuit including Ramson Badbonez and Beat Butcha who both provide remarkable contributions to the album. So far it looks great.
With the foundations laid for Hunger Pains it’s time for Skandal to deliver. Not only does Skandal display the hunger required (pardon the pun), it arrives on a silver platter and in enormous proportions. The likes of “Home Economics” which is a Beat Butcha-produced track is raw U.K Hip-Hop at it’s finest. Immediately afterwards Skandal hits fans with “Family Tree” which is a solo track which is ideal for a street anthem. Skandal’s natural rhyming pattern shines through in both tracks, and shapes the rest of the album perfectly.
No U.K Hip-Hop album is complete without a display of immense lyricism. The pulse-raising “Terrovision” contains political substance, and the imagery-turned-reality style is evidently a strong point of Skandal’s persona. Terrovision has all the qualities for the underground radio scene, and my only criticism would be the length. Critiques and fans want to hear more! It seems that DJ MK and Skandal anticipated the request, so “Exorcising Demons” is a quick-fire effort which is a lot cleverer than a lot of people think.
Not only should Skandal and DK MK profit financially from Hunger Pains, but the publicity surrounding the release has been excellent. The availability to download the album digitally from e-stores will boost sales, and the artwork and packaging is somewhat unique too. A combination of U.K Hip-Hop and Grime from two established figureheads in the music world is exactly what we wanted. I’m confident the support from fans will be great, and a celebration will be on the cards for both DJ MK and Skandal.
