By Joe Langham
Can B performed Don’t Sleep in its entirety, to a small exclusive crowd at J T Soars. Situated away from the hustle and bustle on the outskirts of the city centre, J T Soars is an old fruit and vegetable warehouse, turned into a small live venue and studio. With a stage fashioned out of rugs and illuminated with lamps it is akin to a gig in your own living room, the sofas around the side only adding to this feeling.
The launch, which was attended by a wide variety of Nottingham’s young creative minds, saw performances from a couple of local artists including one of the area’s finest; Cappo. Cappo played a selection of his works, including the ever popular track: Yul Brenner.
Can B was set a high example to follow considering the calibre of the acts before him, risking being outshone at his own album launch, yet pulled off a great performance of a very promising album.
Can B was also joined on stage throughout his set, by a plethora of Notts based artists who feature on Don’t Sleep including Cappo, Delo the Nomad and Motormouf.
The album was brilliantly diverse both in beats and lyrically and proved equally pleasurable whether intently listening or not. A rare feat these days what with most modern music consisting of a soulless song with a catchy beat or more intellectually rewarding songs that become forgotten due to dull beats or poor production.
Don’t Sleep beckoned another wake up call to the UK’s London-centric scene, showing that the rest of the UK are ready to step up to take their slice of the musical pie.
Don’t Sleep is available for free download from BandCamp now. The link is at the top of the page. In the meantime, check out the track Bed of Nails below.
