We announced last week that Ill Poetic and Definition Music LLP had created a new platform in our written piece titled “Something Greater“. To continue to celebrate the news, I wanted to share a new track from Ill Poetic called “Fingertip”. Described as an “ethereal funk trip-hop track, mined from a lost Sade and Thom Yorke collaboration” the song is actually ten years old.
“I actually started working on this song almost 10 years ago for an unreleased instrumental album I’d made. About a year ago I revisited the piece and replayed some new drums and keys around it to liven it up. Then, last month I sung some light vocals on top as a finishing touch. I think the song is about detachment, but it could probably go a few different ways. Regardless, here we are with a free, new song,”Fingertip”.
For those unfamiliar with Ill Poetic I would highly recommend searching the Hip-Hop Kings archives to view the previous music (or check out his bandcamp page) and sounds that create quite an excellent and extensive back catalogue. You can listen to Fingertip on the soundcloud player below.
Many Hip-Hop Kings readers will be familiar with Definition Music as the label that Ohio-based Ill Poetic has released his discography through. The recent news from Definition Music is the extension of the label to other artforms, ultimately aiming toward something greater. The transition will provide a growing collective of artists an opportunity to showcase their music, art and film talents on a larger scale. A brand new website has launched and Definition Music LLC have provided a promotional video which you can view below.

The man Ill Poetic is back again (the second time this week) with another video for fans for the single “Hourglass”. The track is taken from Ill Poetic’s E.P “Synesthesia: The Yellow Movement” which is available for download on the link above. Ill Poetic is currently building up toward the release of the “Silhouette” short film (keep your eyes peeled for more info on this) and the Hourglass video is a final treat for fans from the E.P. Ohio based Ill Poetic returns to Hip-Hop Kings with a video presenting a live version of the single “Pretzel Logic”. As part of the Corner Sessions series, Ill Poetic teams up with his band to perform the single (which he explains is the name of a Steeley Dam album – but more importantly the first album he and his Dad bonded over musically). The video has been filmed at Brothers Drake Meadery in Columbus Ohio, and credits go to Nathan Chase, Kyle Stoner and Aaron Vaughan for the edits. I’m fortunate to speak with Ill Poetic who as an artist, and person never fails to impress me. His recent single “Main Street Mission” is the latest offering, with a nice story behind the reason of its existance.
My wife and I got in the habit of buying $5 gift cards to fast food spots and keeping them in the car to give to homeless people when we hit an intersection. With a $5 giftcard to Wendys, especially in this weather, you can get 2-5 meals which at least guarantees a warm place to hang out for as long as possible. Every time we do this, this “Main Street Mission” song I made a little while ago pops up in my head, so I figured now would be a good time to drop it. This isn’t a corny “help the homeless” Will.I.am song. Just a reminder that it’s cold as shit outside and some people have way more to worry about for the holidays than Black Friday sales.

I was delighted to receive some new Ill Poetic in my inbox, certainly after recent Tweets stating he cared MUCH more about the type of music being released, rather than catering for the blogs. “Autonomy” is the latest single, and Ill Poetic also confirmed that “Synesthesia: The Yellow Movement” will be dropping this autumn with (of course) all brand new music. I will be posting the official track listing and artwork as soon as it becomes available, however in the meantime you can listen to Ill Poetic – Autonomy on the soundcloud player below.
