With its first album released to rapturous applause from the hip hoHip-Hopp community, Chess Move Cartel is back with a second helping – 9 Strategic Lives. Weezy catches up with the creative team – made up of Chess Move, DJ Jabbathakut, Shadowstar Boxer and MC Oneline
Weezy – So, fresh off the back of Furious Jabs, you’re already bringing more heat to the game! Chess Move, aka the mastermind behind CMC, what was your initial vision for 9 Strategic Lives?
CM: Hey Weezy – thanks for stepping to the scribe for us once again. I think the initial and overall vision from my perspective was to deliver a body of work that captures a level and energy that was once rife, but through hip hop’s evolution and changes in trends (as is to be expected) has gradually faded away. There are pockets of it but it’s nowhere near as widespread as it used to be. To me, hip hop/rap comes from a b-boy ethic, which is all based around the question of who’s got what it takes; if you think you have got it then take to the stage and bring it on. So this album, through its music style, arrangement and delivery, was geared towards presenting elements of that.
